On 8 January 2019 the department celebrated the exploits of the DCS matric class of 2018 at Durban Management Area. The inmate matric learners set the bar high this year with a 77.3% pass rate, bettering 2017’s feat of 76.7%. The awards ceremony is held every year to acknowledge and celebrate the hard work of both learners and teachers in matric.
Minister Michael Masutha, who officiated the ceremony, said over 500 teachers and trainers in various schools and training centres in correctional facilities around the country selflessly impart knowledge and skills to inmates. The knowledge puts inmates in a better position to become productive members of society, able to provide for themselves and their families, and to become a positive influence in society.
