DCS hands over food donation to the Mhlanti family in Mqanduli, Mthatha Management Area
On 05 December 2020, donations were handed over to Mhlanti family who were struck by the killing of six (06) family members in Mqanduli, Mthatha Management Area.
Six deceased that includes Azakhiwe Mhlanti (10); Ibanathi Mhlanti (08); Wineka Mhlanti (05); Thoko Mhlanti (05); Luphumlo John Mhlanti (06 months) and their mother Nomzamo Mhlanti (42) who were brutally killed on 01 December 2020, allegedly by a boyfriend of Nomzamo.
A 32 year old suspect was arrested on Thursday night in Ginsberg, King Williams Town.
After hearing about the incident the Department embarked on a process of sourcing donations. Fifteen bags of cabbages; bags of carrots; meat and other items were sourced and have been handed to the family on 05 December 2020.
The Deputy Minister of Correctional Services, Nkosi Phatekile Holomisa was accompanied by the Acting Executive Mayor Councillor Mbomvu, some members of Mbhashe Council and officials of the DCS to hand over the donations and give support to the Mhlanti family.
The Deputy Minister highlighted the roles of the Department of Correctional Services including Corrections, Rehabilitation, Social Reintegration and further echoed the roles of government, National, Provincial and Local Municipalities. He also made reflections on the interests of District Development Model in our operations as government spheres, hence all spheres are participating in the process.
The family was very grateful and they mentioned that the donation will add value and that the presence of government representatives was regarded as a special family support.
The funeral took place on 06 December 2020.
