Two Department of Correctional Services (DCS) officials, Ms Nompumelelo Ntshangase and Ms Lerato Tlale, have earned national recognition through their appointment to key committees of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) — the body responsible for managing South Africa’s participation in international multi-sport events such as the Olympic and Commonwealth Games.

Ms Ntshangase, the DCS Gauteng Manager for Special Category Clubs, has been appointed to the SASCOC School Sport Committee, which is tasked with nurturing athletic talent among learners. Also serving as President of the South African Handball Federation, she brings a wealth of experience in youth sports development. Notably, she recently led the South African Handball Team as Head of Delegation at the inaugural Commonwealth Men’s Beach Handball Championship.
“School sport forms the foundation for developing future champions,” Ms Ntshangase said. “Working with learner-athletes allows us to grow sport across all communities, especially in under-resourced schools.”
Her priorities include promoting grassroots sports development, fostering business partnerships to fund school sport, and establishing sustainable leagues to boost South Africa’s international competitiveness.
Ms Tlale, Assistant Director for Employee Sport and Recreation in the Free State and Northern Cape Region, has been appointed to the SASCOC Branding, Marketing, Commercialization and Communication Commission (BMCCC). A multi-award-winning sports administrator, she also serves as an Independent Director of the Free State Cricket Union.
“I am honoured to serve at national level,” Ms Tlale said. “The BMCCC plays a crucial role in shaping the image of SASCOC and Team South Africa. Our work focuses on strengthening brand advocacy, securing sponsorships, and ensuring our athletes represent the country with excellence and pride.”

Both Ms Ntshangase and Ms Tlale will serve four-year terms on their respective committees from 2025 to 2029, marking a proud milestone for the Department of Correctional Services in advancing leadership within national sport structures.
