National Commissioner Tackles the Two Oceans 24km Long Trail Run

National Commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services, Mr Makgothi Thobakgale, is participating in the gruelling 24km Two Oceans Long Trail Run currently underway in Cape Town, joining hundreds of runners on one of South Africa’s most demanding trail courses.

The race challenges participants with steep climbs, technical descents, and rugged terrain across the world-renowned Table Mountain, testing both mental endurance and physical strength.

By taking part, the National Commissioner leads by example in promoting a healthy lifestyle among correctional officials.

Despite being a debutant in the event, he is well prepared, drawing on prior trail running experience and focused training.

“Prior to this trail, I participated in three trail runs as part of my preparation. In my most recent event, we had to cross a river four times, which illustrates just how unpredictable trail running can be. Every trail is unique and presents its own challenges. It is completely different from a typical road race or marathon, requiring significantly more effort and greater physical strength,” said National Commissioner Thobakgale.

His participation also demonstrates solidarity with 167 Correctional Services officials who will be competing in the Two Oceans 56km and 21km marathons later in the weekend.
