A new chapter of leadership has begun at the Johannesburg Management Area, following the formal welcoming of Ms Mabocha Lydia Mamabolo by the National Commissioner of the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), Mr Makgothi Thobakgale, on 07 September 2026.
During the welcoming ceremony, National Commissioner Thobakgale pinned the insignia of the Deputy Commissioner rank on Ms Mamabolo, formally recognising her appointment and the responsibility entrusted to her as the new Area Commissioner of Johannesburg Management Area.
Ms Mamabolo assumed her new position on 01 July 2026, bringing with her valuable leadership experience gained during her tenure as Area Commissioner (Director) at the Polokwane Management Area, where she served from February 2020 to 30 June 2026.
Leading with purpose
Welcoming Ms Mamabolo to the Gauteng Region, National Commissioner Thobakgale emphasised the significance of her new responsibility. The Johannesburg Management Area is the largest management area in the region in terms of offender population and operates within a complex environment shaped by the province’s sophisticated crime landscape.
The National Commissioner highlighted that strong and accountable leadership is essential to ensuring that the Department continues to fulfil its mandate effectively, from the safe and humane custody of offenders to rehabilitation, correction and successful reintegration into society.
He further noted that Ms Mamabolo’s appointment reflects the Department’s continued commitment to strengthening service delivery and ensuring that Correctional Services remains responsive to the needs of the people of South Africa.
Bringing experience to Johannesburg
Ms Mamabolo’s transition from Polokwane to Johannesburg represents an opportunity to build on her previous leadership experience while responding to the unique operational demands of one of the Department’s largest management areas.
Her role will be central to fostering effective administration, strengthening operational performance and supporting the Department’s broader rehabilitation and correctional objectives.
Ms Mamabolo holds a Bachelor of Business Administration Honours degree, a Bachelor of Business Administration degree, and a National Diploma in Accounting.
Her career in the public service spans more than two decades, having served in various financial and administrative roles. She began her career at the Department of Health as a State Accountant (2001–2002), later advancing to Senior State Accountant (2002–2004) and then to Assistant Manager: Finance (2004–2009).
In 2009, she joined the Department of Correctional Services as Area Coordinator (Deputy Director) for Finance and Supply Chain Management, a position she held until her appointment as Area Commissioner at Polokwane Management Area in 2020.
As she begins this new journey, National Commissioner Thobakgale wished Area Commissioner Mamabolo well and expressed his confidence in her contribution to strengthening correctional services in the Johannesburg Management Area.
