KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng emerged as the undisputed football kings and queens on Friday, 11 September 2026, when the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) National Soccer Championships drew to a dramatic close at the St Albans Management Area in the Eastern Cape.
The five-day tournament, held from 7 to 11 September 2026, brought together DCS officials from across the country to celebrate sport, camaraderie, and wellness. It allowed colleagues to connect beyond the workplace while promoting healthy lifestyles, teamwork, sportsmanship, and unity within the department.
All six DCS regions fielded teams in both the male and female competitions, showcasing the depth of sporting talent and competitive spirit among officials nationwide.
The opening matches on 7 September saw the host region, Eastern Cape, face off against the Free State and Northern Cape region in both categories. From the first whistle, teams displayed determination, discipline, and teamwork, setting the tone for an electrifying national championship.
As the tournament progressed, KwaZulu-Natal established itself as a dominant force in the male competition, while Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal fought their way into the female final.
The final day delivered a fitting climax. In the male final, KwaZulu-Natal defeated Western Cape 1–0 to claim the title and cement its status as the competition’s undisputed champion. In the female final, Gauteng edged out KwaZulu-Natal by the same margin, securing a hard-fought 1–0 victory.
The tournament also honoured outstanding individual performances. In the male category, Sifiso Msibi of the Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West (LMN) region was named Top Goal Scorer after netting three goals, while Njabulo Gumede of KwaZulu-Natal received the Best Goalkeeper award. Musa Juqu of Western Cape was named Male Player of the Tournament.
In the female category, Aletta Matswella of the LMN Region claimed the Top Goal Scorer accolade following an impressive seven-goal haul. Irene Khunong of Gauteng was named Best Goalkeeper, while Rose Mabena, also of Gauteng, was recognised as Female Player of the Tournament.
Beyond the scoreboard, the championships served as a platform for strengthening relationships among DCS officials from different regions. The event underscored the importance of employee wellness, physical activity, and teamwork in building a healthy, motivated workforce.
As the final whistle sounded at St Albans, the 2026 National Soccer Championships concluded not only with new champions but also with a renewed sense of unity and pride among DCS officials.
