As the Class of 2026 prepares to begin their final examinations on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, I wish to extend my heartfelt words of encouragement and support to our inmate matriculants. This is an important milestone in their educational journey, marking the culmination of months of hard work, dedication and perseverance.
The examination period is an opportunity for our learners to demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have acquired through long hours of studying, attending classes, working closely with their educators and supporting one another. I encourage them to remain focused, approach each examination with confidence and give their very best as they work towards achieving success in every subject.
We have seen encouraging growth in the number of inmate matriculants, from 180 candidates in 2025 to 268 in 2026. This increase reflects progress not only in the number of learners participating in the matric examinations, but also in the number of subjects being written and the participation of female inmates. It demonstrates our continued efforts to expand access to education within correctional facilities while maintaining the standard of excellence achieved in 2025, when our inmate matriculants attained an impressive 94% pass rate.
To our matriculants, I say: give it your all. You have worked hard to reach this point, and now is the time to remain determined and focused. You are on the final stretch of this journey. Believe in yourselves, trust in the preparation you have undertaken and approach every examination with the determination to succeed. Your circumstances do not define your potential, and education remains an important tool in preparing you for a better future.
I also wish to express my appreciation to our educators, school principals, correctional facility managers, area commissioners and everyone who has contributed to the educational journey of our matriculants. Your efforts extend beyond the examination period, as you continue to support learners who are still pursuing their basic education. The difference you make is evident in the progress of our learners and the positive changes taking place in their lives. I encourage you to continue with this important work, which contributes not only to rehabilitation and personal development, but also to South Africa’s broader educational outcomes.
As the examinations get underway, we will visit correctional centres to assess the examination environment and ensure that conditions are conducive to learning and writing. These visits will also provide an opportunity to offer encouragement and support to our matriculants as they navigate this final stage of their educational journey. We want them to know that they are not alone; the Department stands with them as they work towards achieving their goals.
We are optimistic that the Class of 2026 will build on the achievements of the previous year and deliver another strong performance. With 268 candidates sitting for the examinations, we look forward to seeing an improvement in both participation and results. Our expectation is that the commitment demonstrated throughout the year will translate into positive outcomes.
To the Class of 2026, I wish you all the best as you begin your examinations. You have come this far, and you should be proud of the effort you have invested in your education. We wish you success in every subject and look forward to celebrating your achievements.
Good luck, Class of 2026. Well done in anticipation!
