What began with excitement and ambition quickly turned into a tough lesson.

“I failed to complete the course as a novice due to a lack of experience,” he recalls. “I over-trained while preparing for my first Comrades in 2025, and I ended up with a knee injury that kept me out for eight weeks.”

Despite the setback, his passion for The Ultimate Human Race never faded. Driven by determination and known for his unwavering spirit, Molatseli made the bold decision to stand at the starting line, even though he had not yet fully recovered.

At first, everything went according to plan. “I felt strong and confident, even after crossing the halfway mark at Drummond. Joy filled me – it seemed like everything was finally coming together,” he remembers.

However, the Comrades Marathon has a way of testing even the strongest and most elite athletes. Without warning, the injury flared up again and forced him to ease his pace. With every step, the finish line drifted further out of reach, until time ultimately ran out.

“They cut me off at the 68km mark, with only approximately 21km remaining to reach the finish line,” he explains. He soon found himself on the bailer bus – a specialised sweep vehicle that collects runners who miss cut-off times or cannot finish due to fatigue or injury. No athlete ever wants to be there.

“When you get onto the bailer bus, runners hardly speak – not out of rudeness, but because of deep reflection, heartbreak and self-introspection. The silence is intense; you could hear a needle drop. It feels as though everyone is mourning. I would not wish that experience on any athlete,” shares Molatseli.

The Botshabelo-born runner, also known as “Hauza” adds that the Comrades comes with immense pressure. “Family members, friends, acquaintances, teammates and colleagues track my progress on the Comrades Marathon App. I constantly felt overwhelmed by WhatsApp messages and calls from people wanting to know what went wrong. The pain of not finishing cuts very deep, and going home empty-handed without a medal only makes it even harder,” he reveals.

His journey towards redemption began in October 2025 with renewed focus. Since then, he has put in the work and competed in several marathons, including Kaapsehoop, Run City of Mbombela, Mimosa Mall, Kloppers, Pamoja and Lemo Mall Mangaung. He aims to complete the Comrades Marathon in 10 to 11 hours.

Molatseli, who finished the 2026 Two Oceans 56km Ultramarathon for the 15th time in 06:33, indicates that he is now tapering his weekly mileage as he prepares for the big occasion. Sharing advice with first-time Comrades Marathon runners, he emphasises the importance of discipline and self-awareness.

“You must stay committed from the start, as that sets the foundation for your race. Avoid letting many athletes bombard you with advice. Some running groups or buses may be too fast if you have not trained at their pace, and that can lead to burnout. Focus on what suits you best and run your own race,” concludes Molatseli.

Photo caption: DCS Grootvlei Athletics Club ultramarathon runner, Mohau Molatseli.
