What began inside the correctional centre did not end with his release. Samuels carried his commitment to mentoring with him beyond the fortified walls of the correctional centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, as an ex-offender, he mentors parolees and probationers through the arts. For Samuels, art transcends painting. He believes art lessons instil essential values such as discipline, respect, encouragement and humility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He says his work with offenders has also changed him, making him a more responsible and humble person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reflecting on his reintegration journey, Samuels encountered no major difficulties when he returned to his community. He credits the supportive community and family he returned to, as well as the encouragement he received, for helping him rebuild his life successfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picture-01-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11365\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picture-01-768x1024.jpg 768w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/Picture-01-225x300.jpg 225w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/Picture-01-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/Picture-01-400x533.jpg 400w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/Picture-01.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Like many parents, however, he faces challenges of a different kind. Samuels says one of his current struggles is navigating the behaviour of his teenage children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery alignright has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" data-id=\"11364\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picture-01-Collage-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11364\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/Picture-01-Collage-768x1024.jpg 768w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/Picture-01-Collage-225x300.jpg 225w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/Picture-01-Collage-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/Picture-01-Collage-400x533.jpg 400w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/Picture-01-Collage.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Having experienced the consequences of his own choices, Samuels offers a simple message for those preparing for parole: do not allow the past to determine the rest of your life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You can&#8217;t change the past, but you can choose to move forward,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He encourages parolees to be respectful, set a good example for others and, above all, make the right choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking ahead, Samuels has dreams of his own.
