Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, MEC Ricardo McKenzie, presented the symbolic cheque to Western Cape Regional Commissioner, Advocate Chantelle Williams-Paulse, at Drakenstein Management Area, formerly Victor Verster Prison, on Wednesday, 28 October 2026.

In her opening address, the Regional Commissioner expressed sincere appreciation for the Western Cape Government’s continued support. She emphasised that the race represents far more than a sporting event. It serves as a meaningful tribute to the legacy of Tata Nelson Mandela, whose final days of imprisonment were spent at the then Victor Verster Prison before his release on 11 February 1990. The race symbolises freedom, hope, perseverance, and the enduring values of democracy.

The Regional Commissioner also acknowledged the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) for setting an example to other government departments through its continued commitment to the event. “This partnership demonstrates the value of collaboration between government departments in promoting sport, community development and social cohesion,” she said.

MEC McKenzie expressed admiration for the achievements of Department of Correctional Services (DCS) athletes who recently participated in the Comrades Marathon. He commended their determination and sporting excellence, and expressed the hope that they would also participate in the 27 For Freedom Race.

Looking ahead, he highlighted an exciting opportunity to position the race within a broader Festival of Running, connecting it with other established road-running events in the region, including the Discovery Firgrove Race in Cape Town and the Peninsula Marathon. With the Peninsula Marathon following the 27 For Freedom Race, the latter presents an ideal opportunity for runners to prepare for the subsequent challenge while experiencing a unique and historically significant route.

Minister McKenzie noted that the three events could collectively contribute to a wider celebration of running, attracting more participants, encouraging healthy lifestyles and promoting the Western Cape as a destination for sporting events. He expressed excitement about the potential to develop the race into something much bigger, citing its scenic landscape, historical significance and vibrant atmosphere as elements that embody joy, happiness and community spirit.

A key focus of his address was the importance of school sport in addressing broader social challenges affecting young people. He reiterated the Western Cape Government’s vision of encouraging every school to participate in sport, with the race presenting an opportunity for learners to become actively involved in physical activity.

“A child in sport is a child out of court,” he said, emphasising the importance of keeping children engaged in constructive activities.

He explained that school sport could play a significant role in addressing many of society’s social challenges. With the Western Cape Government having invested R130 million in school sport, events such as the 27 For Freedom Race provide valuable opportunities for thousands of young people to participate in organised sporting activities.

Through these initiatives, government aims to promote healthy lifestyles, discipline, teamwork and positive social development while creating alternatives that keep young people away from crime and other harmful influences.

Beyond its sporting objectives, the 27 For Freedom initiative also recognises the importance of spiritual and moral development within communities. The programme extends beyond the race itself, with a church service planned for the following day. This gathering provides an opportunity for participants and community members to reconnect with their spiritual roots, reflect on shared values and strengthen the moral foundations that contribute to cohesive and resilient communities.

The combination of sport, history, spirituality, and community participation gives the 27 For Freedom initiative a distinctive character, reinforcing its potential to become a significant annual event on the Western Cape’s sporting calendar.

The handover of the R500 000 symbolic cheque represents an important investment in the continued growth and sustainability of the race. It also reflects the shared commitment of the Department of Correctional Services and the Western Cape Government to honouring South Africa’s democratic heritage while creating meaningful opportunities for communities, particularly young people.

For Drakenstein Management Area, the race remains an opportunity to showcase the historical significance of the former Victor Verster Prison, celebrate freedom and inspire future generations through sport. As preparations continue for the next edition, the vision of expanding the race into a broader Festival of Running offers exciting prospects for increased participation, tourism, community engagement and sporting excellence.

The continued support of government partners will be instrumental in transforming this vision into reality, ensuring that the 27 For Freedom Race remains a powerful symbol of freedom, unity and the enduring legacy of Tata Nelson Mandela.

The Western Cape Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the 27 For Freedom Race, handing over a R500 000 contribution ahead of the 2027 instalment on 06 February 2027.
