{"id":325,"date":"2016-02-18T06:29:05","date_gmt":"2016-02-18T06:29:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/10.123.91.139\/New\/?page_id=325"},"modified":"2018-02-06T09:23:45","modified_gmt":"2018-02-06T09:23:45","slug":"social-work-services","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"\/?page_id=325","title":{"rendered":"Social Work Services"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><b>Purpose<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Core function of Social Work Services is to assess the offenders and provide needs based Programmes and Services in order to enhance the adjustment, social functioning and reintegration of offenders back into the community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Functions Performed by Social Work Services<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Professional\u00a0 assessment\u00a0 of offenders<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Provide social work services and programmes \u00a0to offenders<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Assist offenders to develop coping skills<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Ensure the provision of therapeutic counseling and support to offenders<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Compile reports\u00a0 to the Correctional Supervision and\u00a0 Parole Board<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Build partnership with external service providers (NGOs, CBOs, families and the community) in the rehabilitative process<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Participate and represent the Department of correctional Services\u00a0 in the Interdepartmental\u00a0 Structures addressing issues of children, youth, women, disabled and elderly offenders<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Organize awareness and information sharing campaigns in order to expand the knowledge of offenders on child protection , domestic violence, crime prevention and human rights etc<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0Facilitate contact \u00a0\u00a0between offenders and their\u00a0families in order to build and maintain healthy family relationships\u00a0thus contributing to stable families\u00a0and\u00a0positive lifestyles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Inform \u00a0policy formulation through practice and contributing to professional knowledge of social work through research and paper presentations<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Provide, capacity building to professionals<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Embark on action based research to inform appropriate interventions<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Target Groups<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">All categories of offenders i.e children, young offenders, male and female offenders, the elderly offenders with disabilities, probationers and parolees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Social workers in the Department of Correctional Services are providing services at correctional facilities level as well as at the community corrections offices in all regions. The services provided by social workers are managed and coordinated at head office level<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Social Work Methods<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0In the provision of services social workers use basic professional methods of social work practice including casework, group work, community work research and administration. The variety of skills, techniques and processes are used in the engagements with the offenders. In the provision of services, professional social workers are required by the professional body (South African Council of Social Services Professions) to discharge their services with integrity, commitment and exercise their professional discretion to the best interest of the client\/offender.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Services and Programmes Provided<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>A.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Services<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Assessment<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Counseling services (offered to individual offenders)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Supportive services (offered during traumatic experiences e.g. death or living with HIV and AIDS)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Crisis intervention (basically to victims of traumatic experiences and for the awaiting trial detainees on referral)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Administrative (variety of reports required for the offenders e.g. parole board reports, reconstruction services reports etc)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>B.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Programmes<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Orientation<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Life Skills<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Substance Abuse<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Family and Marriage Enrichment<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Anger Management<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Sexual Offender Treatment Programme<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Resilience Enhancement Programme (Youth Programme)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Social Workers also participate in the following programmes:<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">HIV and AIDS Programme<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Pre-Release Programme<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Policies Available<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The practice of social work in DCS is informed by all applicable legislation and international standards as well as the following policies developed within: this\u00a0field:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Social Work Policy<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Youth Policy<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Policy for offenders with Disabilities<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Infants and Mothers Policy<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Child offender Policy<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Elderly Offender\u2019s Policy<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Requirements to work as a Social Worker in DCS<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The entry level of newly appointed social workers is at level seven (7). The applicant should satisfy the following requirements to be employed in DCS:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Be in possession of a Grade 12 Certificate<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Be in possession of\u00a0 the relevant \u00a0Degree in Social Work<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Be registered with the South African Council for Social Work Service Professions<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Have a Code EB (08) driver\u2019s license<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Be proficient in English and any other indigenous language<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The practice of social work within the Department of Correctional Services is regulated by the South African Council for Social Services, a legislated body established in terms of the Social Service Professions Act (110 of 1978) to ensure professional standards and ethics of\u00a0the practicing social workers.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Purpose The Core function of Social Work Services is to assess the offenders and provide needs based Programmes and Services in order to enhance the adjustment, social functioning and reintegration of offenders back into the community.
