In his opening remarks, Commissioner Thobakgale mentioned that DCS is mandated to change the minds and behaviour of inmates, through various programmes including the Funda Mzantsi Championship. It is for this reason that DCS has committed itself to Funda Mtzantsi project because it fully understands that Education is a necessary vehicle that has the potential to change the socioeconomic conditions of the country. It is for this reason that inmates must remain active and must be given relevant skills that will be of use post incarceration. “Reading exposes inmates to new ideas, challenges their thinking and allow them to reflect and gain a better understanding,” said Commissioner Thobakgale.

The Championship commenced with a review competition of a book titled: “The Yearn” authored by Mohale Mashigo for the English category.
