The visit follows recent discussions between the National Commissioners of both countries held virtually pertaining to the operations of the two departments, focusing on areas of common interest, development and potential opportunities for partnerships.

The meet-and-greet session was held at Kgoši Mampuru II Management Area to officially introduce the delegates of the Lesotho Correctional Services (LCS) including officials of Lesotho Highlands Development Authority (LHDA) which falls under the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP), to share the itinerary for the week and to ensure that all logistical proceedings are aligned.

The 4-day tour will focus on Kgoši Mampuru II and Zonderwater management areas in the Gauteng Region as well as Ebongweni Maximum Correctional Centre which falls under Kokstad Management Area in the KwaZulu-Natal Region.

The LHWP has an existing bilateral cooperation with South Africa on matters of water transfers and is anticipating learning best practises as they are in the process of building a state-of-the-art facility in one of the Lesotho Correctional Services.

Lesotho National Commissioner, Mating Nkakala extended his gratitude to DCS for the warm reception and for allowing the benchmarking visit to happen. He said this is in keeping with the objectives of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two departments, to learn best practises from each other.

The visit will also focus on macro discussions on facilities planning and property management which will give the Lesotho delegation solutions on some of the issues they are to face in their building project. National Commissioner, Thobakgale, concluded by commending the LHDA entity on their exciting project of the water transfer to South Africa, adding that valuable lessons can be gleaned from the project.
