On 3 December 2024, a poignant ceremony was held to honour the ex-political prisoners of Robben Island, a symbol of the struggle against apartheid and a testament to the sacrifices made for freedom in South Africa. Acting Regional Commissioner of the Western Cape region, Kenneth Mthombeni delivered an emotional tribute, acknowledging the profound impact these individuals have had on the nation’s journey towards democracy.
He reflected on his own beginnings in Correctional Services, a time when he was acutely aware of the brutalities of the apartheid system. “I immediately got emotional when I looked at you and realized that I am what I am because of what you have done,” he expressed, underscoring the deep respect and gratitude felt by many for their sacrifices.
Area Commissioner of Drakenstein Management Area, Ntomboxolo Kungune also expressed gratitude, highlighting the significance of their presence. She announced the upcoming celebration of the 27 for Freedom Race on 8 February 2025, an event aimed at honouring the legacy of Nelson Mandela and those who fought alongside him. “We cannot do this without those who walked and worked alongside Mandela,” she stated, reinforcing the importance of collective remembrance and appreciation.
Mr Manfred Jacobs from AVBOB further enrichened the conversation by quoting former President Nelson Mandela, who famously stated, “My freedom and your freedom cannot be separated.” Jacobs expressed his honour at AVBOB’s involvement in this historic engagement, underlining the organisation’s commitment to social responsibility.
Mr Joseph Ngoma who spoke on behalf of the group, thanked DCS management, led by acting Regional Commissioner Mthombeni and all stakeholders involved, for facilitating the initiative, demonstrating that solidarity is vital in addressing the ongoing plight of those who fought for freedom.
The collaboration between DCS and AVBOB provided a much-needed platform for ex-political prisoners to share their experiences, reflect on their past, and look toward the future. The day did not end with the distribution of the legacy packs on 10 December 2024, but continued at Grabouw where identified beneficiaries were handed legacy packs. Mr Jumaats reflected on the concept of Ubuntu that my child is your child and therefor also my mother is your mother.
